
The film opens with this inmate talking to his fellow inmates over the loud speaker as a radio anouser in a person. The story is that a hip down to earth african american ex con, Petey Green gets a chance to be a radio personality in Washington DC in the 60s. This is the place and time for Petey express himself to the fullest extent and the public seems to love it. As Petey gains popularity his friend and colege Dewey Hughes helps him in to show business with, talk shows, stand up gigs and even a chance to go on the tonight show. When Dewey Hughes gets cought up in fame he manages to miss that Petey is the guy behind the mic “tellin it like it is” not the guy in front of a camera being someone he is not.
